What do they mean?
Richard Russell: He was an American Politician who was part of the Democratic Party. He was born on November 2nd, 1897 and died on January 21, 1971. For his education he went to the University of Georgia and University of Georgia School of Law. He was a U.S. senator during WWII.
He was respected for his knowledge and commitment to the preparation of the military. In the Senate, he help build America’s military strength. |
Carl Vinson: He is referred to as the father of the two ocean navy. He represented Georgia in the U.S. House for 25 consecutive terms from 1914-1965. He was chairman for the House Naval Affairs Committee for 16 years. He represented GA’s military interest by doing committee work. He influenced and promoted a strong national defense. Two years before Pearl Harbor, he put 2 bills through Congress; The naval aviation system was expanded to 10,000 planes, trained 16,000 pilots, and 20,000 air bases were established, whereas the next bill made labor restrictions be eased in the industry of shipbuilding and navy ships were made faster. He got the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Johnson in 1964. After he left Congress, he went to his farm in Milledgeville. America’s third nuclear carrier was named after him by President Nixon, and Vinson died 9 years after that.

Hitler: Hitler was the leader of the extremist German group called the Nazis. He wanted to get rid of Germany’s Wiemar Republic, and he blamed Jews for all of Germany’s problems and suffering. He signed a pact/treaty with Stalin and Mussolini. On the first of September, 1939, German forces attacked Poland and Germany and France declared war 2 days later.Germany launched a “blitzkrieg and captured Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and France. Then, a year later, the Battle of Britain began in which German planes bombed Britain. 13,000 British people were killed. Germany soon gave up.

Bombing of Pearl Harbor: On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed an American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The U.S. didn't suspect this would happen and many people thought the fighter planes were actually U.S. planes. At the end of the attack 2,330 Americans were dead, 1,145 were wounded, and hundreds of planes and ships had capsized, such as the S.S. Arizona.The next day, President Roosevelt called Pearl Harbor “a day that will live in infamy”. The U.S. declared war on Japan. Congress approved, but Montana congresswoman Jeannette Rankin believed in nonviolence.

Holocaust: During the German Depression, many Germans started to listen to an extremist group called the National Socialists. They were also called the Nazis. Their leader was Hitler. He wanted to take over German government and rebuild Germany as a world power. The Jews were mostly blamed for Germany’s problems, so they were discriminated and then were persecuted and eliminated.
