Charter of 1732 / Reasons for Settlement |
The Charter of 1732 was the document that was signed by King George III. He was the King of Britain at this time, and he granted Oglethorpe and 20 Trustees permission to colonize Georgia. Oglethorpe wished to allow the people in debtors prison to repay their debt. This colony would serve for charity, economics, and defense. The charity would be for allowing the people to repay debt. The economics would be for the growth of Britain through crops and trees grown in Georgia. The defense would be for South Carolina. Georgia would defend South Carolina and act as a buffer colony because South Carolina had many riches.

TomochichiMary MusgroveMary Musgrove was famous for bringing Yamacraw culture and English culture together. She was born to an English father and a Creek Indian mother. She spent a large part of her life as an interpreter, and she was a large help with trade agreements between Indians and Englishman. One of her most famous interpretations was bonding of Tomochichi and Oglethorpe. Mary Musgrove was very important to Georgia's history.
James Edward Oglethorpe |
Tomochichi was the chief of the Yamacraw Indians. There were no official documents of his childhood, but it is known that he was born a Creek Indian. He was famous for his participation in early interactions with the English colonists. In 1728, he created a new tribe called the Yamacraw Indians. He created this tribe because it was made up of Creek Indians and Yamasee Indians. His tribe contained 200 people, and they lived near the Savannah River. He chose this location because it was easy transportation for trading. Soon, Tomochichi made a new friend, James Oglethorpe. Mary Musgrove provided translation between Tomochichi and Oglethorpe when they first met and discussed trade plans. Tomochichi was very important to the Yamacraw Indians and many other tribes because helped set up schools with the help of James Oglethorpe. Tomochichi died in October 1739 from illness. James Edward Oglethorpe was responsible for the creation of Georgia. He was born into a rich family, and worked for Parliament. He was a very charitable person, and always brought food to the debtors prison. One of his good friends, Robert Castell, was sent to debtors prison. Castell died in prison, and Oglethorpe wanted to give people a chance to repay their debt instead of living their life in prison. He went to King George III, and the king allowed him to create a colony to help these people repay their debt. This colony was the thirteenth British colony called Georgia. |
The City of Savannah
The city of Savannah was the first city created in Georgia. This was the land area given to Oglethorpe from Chief Tomochichi. When Oglethorpe was granted permission to colonize Georgia, they landed in Savannah, and met the Yamacraw Indians. Mary Musgrove, the interpreter, translated between Oglethorpe and Tomochichi. These two became good friends, and Tomochichi gave Oglethorpe Yamacraw Bluff to start building. Oglethorpe named this city Savannah.
