The Barrier Islands are made up of four islands: St. Simmons, Little St. Simmons, Jekyll and Sea Island. The Barrier Islands played a very important role in Georgia's history. They are located along Georgia's south eastern coast line and were used to protect Georgia. Forts were built along the islands to protect against invaders and pirates. They now help prevent coastal erosion as well as prevent flooding in nearby towns. More than 400 years ago, Spanish explorers searching for gold came to the area. They did not find gold but they found the amazing natural beauty that inspired the name "Golden Isles".
